I heard that one shouldn t wash a granite mortar and pestle with soap because the soap water will permeate into the rock and contaminate whatever you grind next. A good cloth with your warm water and unscented detergent will work a great deal in the cleaning of your new grinding tool afterwards thoroughly rinse your new granite mortar and pestle in warm water to remove all evidence of scented soap remaining in it. If i m making pesto in it there has to be some way to get the oily residue off. Do not use soap to clean your mortar and pestle.

You can use a towel or damp mild sponge to clean up the new granite mortar and pestle. For bamboo and wooden mortar and pestles use a damp cloth to wipe them clean. To clean stone mortar and pestles made from marble granite or lava stone use warm water and rice. The most important things to remember when cleaning a volcanic rock mortar and pestle is to avoid using soap and let it dry completely before storing it.

After each use thoroughly rinse your mortar and pestle with warm water.
